The Industrial and Materials Technologies (Brite-Euram III) programme provided support to industry, academia and research organisations for pre-competitive collaborative and cooperative research in materials, design and manufacturing technologies. In addition, the programme included a special emphasis on transport sectors - aeronautics, automobiles, ships and trains.
The main aims of the programme were:
- stimulation of technological innovation
- encouragement of traditional sectors of industry to incorporate new technologies and processes
- promotion of multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary technologies
- development of scientific and technological collaboration

Production technologies, including:
- mining, construction and processing, general manufacturing and cleaner processing
- development of clean production technologies
- rational management of raw materials
- safety and reliability of production systems
- human and organisational factors within production systems
Materials and technologies for production innovation, including:
- materials engineering
- new methodologies for product design and manufacture
- reliability and quality of materials and products
- technologies for recovering products at the end of their life cycle
Technologies for transport, including:
The range of Brite-EuRam activities covered:
- cars, aeroplanes, ships and trains
- design and systems integration
- technologies for improved efficiency and environmental protection
- technologies for safety and operation
1. Shared-cost actions
- the principal form of financing supported under Brite-EuRam III where the Commission provides 50% of the costs of RTD projects selected following a call for proposals. 75% of the available funds were allocated in this way.
2. Technology Stimulation Measures for SMEs
- this formula allowed groups of SMEs with insufficient resources of their own to commission university laboratories or research centres to carry out RTD activities for them.
3. Thematic Networks
- these brought together various individually-run projects that shared similar technological or industrial objectives. The networks could give greater coherence to research activities and encourage the exchange of know-how and technologies. Type 1 networks brought together projects that had not yet received Commission funding, and included two stages (exploratory and implementation phases) in order to encourage network creation. Type 2 networks brought together projects already financed by Brite-EuRam and covered the implementation phase only.
4. Accompanying measures
- included organisation of conferences and workshops, carrying out studies, use of external experts and campaigns to stimulate expressions of interest.
5. Marie Curie Research Training Grants
- Industrial Research Experience was aimed at broadening the experience of qualified young engineers and scientists by exposing them to industrial research with one of the partners in a Brite-EuRam III research project.
6. ECSC Steel Research
- the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) created a framework for collaborative research and an effective network of researchers, promoting not only quality scientific and technological results, but also effective technology transfer with rapid implementation of research results.
